Technical Work Experience
- October 2003 to present: University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. Postdoctoral Research Associate. Primary responsibility is analysis of cosmological simulations. We are attempting to trace the formation and history of dwarf galaxies in these simulations in order to compare with the histories of dwarf galaxies observed in the nearby universe. I am also working on many self-directed research projects to measure star formation histories of nearby galaxies, distances to galaxies in the local volume, and improve calibration of Hubble Space Telescope ACS images.
- September 1999 to October 2003: National Optical Astronomy Observatories, Tucson, AZ. Postdoctoral Research Associate. Studied periodic variable stars in nearby galaxies in order to measure distances and constrain formation histories. Also studied stellar content in order to measure formation histories. Also worked on several self-directed research projects, most notably projects to improve the calibration and accuracy of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations.
- September 1993 to September 1999: University of Washington, Seattle, WA. Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant. As a research assistant, I worked on projects to compute positions of the planets back to the beginning of the solar system, to analyze ionized gas near active galaxies, and my dissertation project, a measurement of the formation histories of nearby galaxies based on the brightnesses and colors of their stars. As a teaching assistant, I taught quiz sections of undergraduate astronomy courses.
- June 1997 to September 1997: Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff, AZ. Summer Intern. Analyzed images of a nearby galaxy to determine rates of star formation and relative amounts of high- and intermediate-mass stars that have recently formed.
- May 1993 to August 1993: Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA. Research Assistant. Studied a relatively nearby supernova to determine how quickly it dimmed.
Church Music Experience
- October 1998 to August 1999: Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, Renton, WA. Choir Director. Rehearsed and conducted adult choir, one rehearsal and one service per week.
- September 1997 to December 1998: University Presbyterian Church, Seattle, WA. Brass Ensemble Director. Rehearsed brass ensemble once per month, played trumpet. Occasional conducting of string ensemble and summer choir during this time as well. Volunteer position.
- July 1997 to September 1997: Peace Lutheran Church, Flagstaff, AZ. Choir Director. Rehearsed and conducted adult choir, one rehearsal and one service per week. Volunteer position.
- September 1995 to December 1998: University Presbyterian Church, Seattle, WA. Member of cathedral choir, a 70 voice audition choir at the church that led three services per week. Also played trumpet in church worship and concert orchestras. No formal position.
- September 1993 to September 1995: Anchor Baptist Church, Seattle, WA. Played guitar in praise bands for weekly contemporary service and weekly college service. Taught occasional Bible studies as part of college ministry. No formal position.
- August 1992 to May 1993: Protestant Chaplaincy, Claremont Colleges, Claremont, CA. Accompanist (guitar). Accompanied singing and played preludes for one service per week.
